Day 13 Mundrabilla to Border Village (73 miles)
A nice non windy start but it didn’t last and was all too soon a full on head wind. We stopped for coffee and timtams in Eucla and due to the headwind I drove him on for 50k and he cycled back to Eucla in no time with a marvellous tailwind. Before leaving Eucla I hid my bag of onions behind a sign as we were told they check you and take all fruit and veg off you at the state border due to fruit flies!!! Back in Eucla later I retrieved my onions as the checkpoint was for cars heading west and not east. Our checkpoint will be 2 days away at Ceduna.
We ventured down a long dirt track to see the old telegraph station which hasn’t been used in years and is being buried in the sand. We walked 1k over the sand and scrub till we reached the ocean and despite signs saying whales etc etc and all unwelcome swimmimg companions, we had a swim! It was great! Worth the risk!!!
We drove on the 12k to Border village which seperates Western from South
Aus. We booked into the campsite there and after a few beers we cooked up a tin of stew, fried onions and a sachet of brown rice. It was a very good day!
Beach day!!!! The Southern Ocean and us.
