Day 12 Madura to Mundrabilla (87.5 miles)

Dermot was on his way at 6.45 . We are now 45 mins ahead in new time zone.  I had a nice early walk while it was still cool. More and more dead kangaroos litter the roadsides . They smell horrific! We saw a badly damaged pickup that was going to cost 1600 aud just to get it home on a trailer!!! Bad luck with a kangaroo!!!
An all too common sight on the Nullarbor plain.

We  are now in the Mundrabilla motel which is one of the most remote on the Nullarbor. It is famous for a UFO sighting some years ago when a car was attacked by a UFO ( worth a look on google!) There was also evidence of an 11 ton meteorite!  
The motel is good though the food not the best!

The filling station at the motel. Fuel started at 1.19 aud but is now 1.88 aud due to remoteness! We can’t do without it though!!!

    Hi. It’s Linda in Geelong. Really enjoying reading your blog. Ian has wanted to do this ride and I have to tell you, I’m not too keen on driving a sagwagon. I can’t cope with heat, as I’m on hormone blockers. I’m in awe of you both. I don’t know how Dermot - or you - can stand the heat! We’ve been trying to work out if you’ll be coming this way, if you only have a month with the Campervan. Cheers.

Day 27 Mildura to Balranald (100 miles)

Another 100 miler ... WOW!!! How did he manage it.... was it the 4 pints last night with a pie and chips? Was it the half day yesterday OR was it the strong tail wind????? The last I reckon!!!! Mildura to Euston was a lovely ride on a really cool morning. It was only 9 degrees setting out ( actually COLD!!)  Nice scenery, lots of vineyards to admire. We entered our final state today, New South Wales! We began in Western Australia, then South Australia, then Victoria and now NSW. We are now in Balranald in a retired service mens club with bottles of Jacob’s Creek Pinot Grigio at the equivalent of £7.50 a bottle! In an ice bucket too! Can’t fault it! We are staying at a riverside camp site which is full of fishermen so it could be  a noisy night!  Last sight if the Murray river.  Citrus fruits  .... oranges? Lemons? Picnic lunch stop by Lake Benanee. Sydney is getting close ... only about 550 miles to go! About 2,000 miles done!

Day 32 Cowra to Bathurst (65 miles)

Awake very early and all ready to go but waiting for the phone call from the bike man.by 9am he told us to come as it was ready so off we set for his house and workshop. All that remains of the original bike is just about the saddle!!! He changed the crank, sprockets, cables, wheel bearings and chain. He straightened the things that needed straightening !He assured Dermot that it will see him out ( more than 2 days I hope!!!)  At 9.30 Dermot was on the road again with a day of enormous hills ahead of him plus an east wind! (We are heading east)   The scenery was lovely as we are now going through the Blue Mountains thought it’s a bit chilly! The signpost said 199 km to Sydney..... so close now! I passed a kangaroo today who was going to run across in front of me and at the last minute he changed his mind! Hopefully he’s still bouncing around as the roads now are VERY busy! Tomorrow we expect more huge mountains to cross before we reach thd outskirts of Sydney and then it...

Day 6 Coolgardie to Norseman (73 miles cycled)

Dermot set off early (as usual) and we met up at Widgiemoolta nearly 50 miles later. There was a good roadside restaurant, wifi etc There were also very reasonable rooms but it was too soon to stop. We asked if there were any vacancies and were told there was one room left at 80 aud . Its a popular stopover due to all the nearby mines. Dermot carried on cycling and I met him every 10 to 20 k to see how he was and replenish his supplies. About 60 k before Norseman he’d had enough. It was very hot and the road was long and straight and monotonous. As there was nowhere safe to pull in for the night he took a lift to Norseman and I will drive him back to that spot in the morning to take up where he left off. We booked into a motel in Norseman , the cheapest so far and breakfast included!!!! A beer or two later and off to the pub for food.It was very busy as the races were on. There was a slight hiccup as all the horses had been returned to Perth so they raced their children instead!...
